Emergency Care

At Eastwood Vets Ballarat we provide our clients with an emergency service for critical illness or injury. This means that in an emergency, please telephone us on our normal contact number 03 4333 4712 to speak to the receptionist (business hours) or follow the prompts to speak to the triage veterinary nurse after-hours. Please note that the Clinic is not open nor staffed 24 hours a day. We hope your pet never needs us for an emergency however, common emergencies relate to car accidents, heart conditions, poisoning and a range of injuries.

Upon arrival, your pet will be assessed by one of our veterinarians. We will aim to provide an estimate of the costs involved with your case, however, please be aware that with emergency procedures costs can vary depending on what services and treatments are required. Our veterinarians will keep you updated regularly during the course of your pet's stay in hospital. In some cases we may need to refer to a veterinary specialist centre or 24-hour emergency facility, especially for those patients requiring constant monitoring after-hours.

Out of Hours

Due to ongoing staff shortages in the veterinary industry, we have changed the way that we deliver after-hours and emergency veterinary advice to all our pet patients.

We have partnered with VetCheck 24/7 to assist in delivering our ongoing after-hours and emergency care.

All calls after-hours to our Clinic will initially be assessed by a triage nurse provided by VetCheck 24/7 to determine the need for further veterinary intervention. Unfortunately, from December 2023 we will no longer be providing an in-clinic after-hours service. We have made arrangements with an emergency clinic in Melbourne (Advanced VetCare 03 9092 0400)  and Geelong (Geelong Animal Emergency 03 5222 2139) that can take calls and help if you have an emergency with your pet.

You will also have the option of being able to speak to a qualified VetCheck Vet via a video consultation (charges apply). The VetCheck Vet will give you the advice and peace of mind that you need and let you know if you need to attend an emergency veterinary centre straight away, or if it can wait until we are open for an in-clinic appointment. You may not need an in-clinic appointment at all.

All the details about the online appointment will be sent back to us so we can continue your pet's care.

We hope you understand these changes are necessary so we can continue to provide you and your pets the compassionate personalised veterinary care you are used to now and into the future.

To speak to the triage nurse regarding any after-hour emergency veterinary concerns, please ring the Clinic on 4333 4712 and follow the prompts.

Please contact us if you have any questions regarding our after-hours arrangement. It’s always nice to know this information before you actually need it.
